Banff Family Photographer | Lake Louise & Banff Session

Banff National Park welcomes over 4 million visitors every year — and for many families, it's a once-in-a-lifetime trip. The kind of trip that deserves more than phone snapshots. If you're bringing your family to the Canadian Rockies, a professional photo session here captures not just how everyone looked — but how it felt to stand together in one of the most extraordinary places on earth.

I'm Oliver Woods, a family photographer permanently based in Lake Louise, Alberta. I shoot family sessions throughout Banff National Park year-round, at every iconic location and in every season. I know which spots work best for groups, which locations are manageable with young children, and how to get natural, relaxed photos from families who've never done a session before — including the kids.

Why Banff is the Perfect Setting for Family Photos

Family photos at home are wonderful. Family photos in Banff National Park are something else entirely. The turquoise lakes, the towering peaks, the endless wilderness — it gives your family photos a scale and beauty that no local park or studio can replicate.

More importantly, a Banff family session captures a moment in time that's genuinely meaningful. The trip itself is the memory — and having professional photos from it means that memory is preserved in a way that lasts generations, not just until your phone runs out of storage.

Family Session Locations in Banff National Park

Lake Louise

The most iconic location in the Canadian Rockies and my most popular family session location. The flat, accessible lakeshore path makes it manageable for all ages — from toddlers to grandparents. The turquoise water and Victoria Glacier backdrop create family photos unlike anything you'd get anywhere else. Early morning sessions avoid the crowds entirely.

Moraine Lake

The Valley of the Ten Peaks backdrop is extraordinary for family photos. Access via the Parks Canada shuttle requires a little advance planning — I'll walk you through exactly what to do. [Read my full Moraine Lake guide →] (link to /moraine-lake-photographer/)

Vermillion Lakes

Just minutes from Banff town, Vermillion Lakes is one of the most accessible and least crowded locations in the park. The flat lakeside path is perfect for families with strollers or young children, and the mountain reflections at golden hour are stunning.

Bow River, Banff Town

Right in the heart of Banff with beautiful river views and mountain backdrops. Easy to access, great in all seasons, and close to cafes and restaurants — perfect if you're working around nap times and hungry kids.

Canmore & the Bow Valley

Just outside the national park, Canmore offers dramatic Three Sisters mountain backdrops with easy access and no shuttle requirements. Great for larger family groups who need flexibility.

Johnston Canyon

The canyon walkways and waterfalls make for a unique, adventurous family session. Best for families with older children who enjoy a short walk. The limestone walls and rushing water create a completely different mood to the open lake locations.

What to Expect From Your Family Session

Before your session:

We'll connect to plan your location, timing, and what to wear. I'll ask about your family — ages of kids, any little ones who might need extra coaxing, whether you have a dog you'd like to include. The more I know in advance, the smoother the session runs.

On the day:

I don't direct families into rigid poses — I work by getting everyone moving and interacting naturally. Walking together, parents swinging kids between them, siblings running ahead on the path. The best family photos come from genuine moments, not everyone standing stiffly in a line staring at the camera.

For younger children especially, I know how to make a session feel like play rather than work. Happy kids make for the best photos — and the most relaxed parents.

After your session:

100+ fully edited images delivered to your private online gallery within 24–48 hours. Download, print, and share them — they're yours forever.

Tips for a Successful Family Session in Banff

As someone who shoots family sessions here year-round, a few things make a real difference:

  • Book an early morning session — the light is softer, the locations are quieter, and kids are often at their best before the day gets busy
  • Build in buffer time — mountain mornings can move slowly. Give yourself extra time to get to the location without stress
  • Bring snacks — a well-fed child is a cooperative child. Non-messy snacks for after the formal shots are a game changer
  • Dress in layers — mountain temperatures change fast, especially near the lakes. Layers you can add or remove keep everyone comfortable
  • Lower your expectations for perfection — the best family photos rarely involve everyone looking at the camera at the same time. Genuine laughter and real interaction always beats a perfect pose

Best Time of Year for Banff Family Photos

Summer (June–August)

Warm temperatures, peak turquoise in the lakes, and long evenings make summer the most popular season for family sessions. Book early — this is my busiest period.

Autumn (September–October)

The golden larches in late September and early October make for extraordinary family photos. Temperatures are cooler but still comfortable, and the crowds thin out significantly after Labour Day. One of my favourite times of year to shoot.

Winter (November–March)

Banff in winter is magical — snow-covered pines, frozen lakes, and a stillness that feels like a Christmas card. Winter family sessions are increasingly popular, particularly for families visiting during the holiday season. Dress very warmly and the results are extraordinary.

Spring (April–May)

Quieter crowds, snow still on the peaks, and the park coming back to life. A beautiful and underrated season for family photos.

What to Wear for Your Family Session

Coordinating outfits for a family session doesn't mean everyone needs to match exactly — it means the colours should work together:

  • Choose a colour palette of 2–3 complementary tones and let each family member choose their own outfit within it
  • Neutral and earthy tones work beautifully against the mountain landscape — cream, tan, rust, forest green, navy, charcoal
  • Avoid bright primary colours — red, yellow, and neon shades draw attention away from faces and the landscape
  • Avoid turquoise or teal in summer — you'll blend into the lake water
  • Comfortable footwear for everyone — some locations involve walking on uneven ground
  • Bring a spare outfit for young children — accidents happen, especially near water

If you're unsure about your outfit choices, send me a photo before the session and I'll give you honest feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age groups do you photograph?

All of them — newborns through to multi-generational family groups with grandparents. I adjust my approach based on who's in the group. Toddlers and young children get a more playful, movement-based session. Older families get a more relaxed, natural approach.

Can we bring our dog?

Absolutely — dogs are welcome at most outdoor locations in Banff National Park. Let me know in advance so I can plan for it. Some of my favourite family photos include the family dog.

How far in advance should we book?

Summer (June–August) is my busiest season — I recommend booking 4–6 weeks in advance. Other seasons have more flexibility but earlier is always better, especially if you have specific dates tied to your Banff trip.

What if one of the kids won't cooperate on the day?

It happens — and it's completely fine. I've photographed enough families to know how to work with reluctant kids. I never force poses and I'm happy to take a break, do a quick walk, or redirect the session entirely if needed. The goal is genuine photos, not perfect ones.

Can we do the session at more than one location?

Yes — extended sessions covering two locations are popular for families who want variety. Lake Louise and Vermillion Lakes together for a golden hour finish is a favourite combination. Get in touch to discuss a custom package.

Is Banff accessible with a stroller?

Yes — the lakeshore paths at Lake Louise and Vermillion Lakes are flat and stroller-friendly. The Moraine Lake rockpile viewpoint and Johnston Canyon involve rougher terrain. I'll recommend the best spots based on your family's needs.
