Moraine Lake might be the most photographed lake in Canada — and once you've seen it in person, you'll understand why. The impossibly turquoise water, the towering Valley of the Ten Peaks, and the famous rockpile viewpoint make it one of the most sought-after photography locations in the world. If you're visiting Moraine Lake and want photos that actually do it justice, you need a photographer who knows it intimately.
I'm Oliver Woods, a portrait photographer based in Lake Louise — just minutes from Moraine Lake. I've shot here in every season, every light condition, and every weather scenario the Rockies can throw at a camera. That local knowledge makes every difference when you're working with one of the most logistically complex locations in Banff National Park.
Moraine Lake has strict access restrictions managed by Parks Canada. Getting this wrong is the most common reason photo sessions fall apart here — so read this carefully:
I'll walk you through all of this when we connect — no logistical surprises on the day.
The Rockpile Viewpoint
The classic. Climb the short trail to the top of the rockpile for the panoramic view that's appeared on the back of the Canadian $20 bill. Arrive before sunrise for golden light and no crowds.
The Lakeshore
Walking along the lakeshore in either direction gives you stunning reflections of the peaks on the water. The far end of the lake, away from the lodge, is quieter and more intimate.
The Canoe Dock
The wooden dock and canoes are iconic Moraine Lake. A couple session here with the peaks reflected in the water behind you is timeless.
The Larch Valley Trail
For couples or families happy to hike 20–30 minutes, the trail above the lake opens up incredible elevated views of the Valley of the Ten Peaks. In late September the larches turn electric gold — my favourite time of year to shoot here.
Every season at Moraine Lake is extraordinary — but they're each very different:
Summer (June–August)
Peak colour in the water, wildflowers on the lakeshore, long golden hours at sunrise and sunset. Book the earliest possible shuttle slot — the crowds arrive fast.
Autumn (September–October)
My personal favourite. The larches turn gold in late September, the crowds thin out, and the light gets that warm, rich quality that makes every photo look like a painting.
Winter (November–April)
The lake freezes and the landscape becomes a snow-covered wilderness. Access is by hike in only, the location is almost entirely deserted, and the blue ice and snow make for surreal, cinematic photos.
Spring (May)
The snow is melting, the ice is breaking up, and the colours are just beginning to return. A beautiful shoulder season with far smaller crowds than summer. Hike in only

Do I need to book the shuttle before contacting you?
I'd recommend reaching out to me first so we can align on a date and time — then book your shuttle to match. Shuttle availability and session timing need to work together, especially in peak season.
What if I can't get a shuttle booking?
If shuttles are sold out, there are a few alternatives including the Lake Louise Lakeshore connector shuttle. Get in touch and I'll help you figure out the best option for your dates.
Can we shoot at both Moraine Lake and Lake Louise in one session?
Yes — I offer extended sessions covering multiple locations. Get in touch to discuss a custom package.
What should we wear?
Neutral earthy tones work beautifully against the turquoise water and grey peaks. Avoid turquoise or teal in summer — you'll blend into the lake. In autumn, warm tones complement the golden larches perfectly.
Is Moraine Lake accessible in a wheelchair or with a stroller?
The lakeshore path is relatively flat and accessible. The rockpile viewpoint involves a short, rocky climb and is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. I'll work with whatever access you have to find the best spots for your group.
Spots fill up fast — especially in summer and larch season. Get in touch as early as possible to secure your date.
